Could a kicker ever be an MVP?

Posted on: January 21, 2008 5:12 pm

As I commented earlier on another thread, I don't think a kicker will ever be an MVP.  If a team in the Superbowl did not score any touchdowns, kicked four field goals, and won the Superbowl 12-10, I still don't think the kicker would be named the Superbowl MVP.  They would name the quarterback that drove them down for the winning field goal, or the wide receiver with 180 receiving yards that caught the pass to put them in field goal range, or a running back, etc...you get the idea.  They would never name the field goal kicker!  This is my first blog entry so i hope you guys and girls like it.

What do you think?

Could a kicker ever be an MVP?

I think you're right on this.  Despite the kickers importance to the team, they still don't get much respect.  Often, it's the kicker who makes the winning points in OT or in the last second of the game to pull out a close win.  A shanked field goal can cost them a trip to the SB.  There never seems to be a problem making the kicker the goat of a lost game, but somehow, when giving the honor of MVP, it seems to be something players, coaches and fans can't wrap their minds around doing.
